Out of more than 120 squads, young newcomers team Simmzy’s/Beckers beat out three-time reigning champs Team Smack Magnum for top place in the Men’s Open competition at the Charles Saikley 6-Man Volleyball Tournament. With a stocked roster including Tommy Becker (Loyola Chicago), Austin Zahn (USC), Kevin Tillie (UCLA), and Carson Clark, Simmzy’s/Beckers won 15-9 in the final, played the last weekend in July with an estimated 60,000 people in attendance at the Manhattan Beach location. With extra time on their hands due to the current league lockout, several NBA players, including Kevin Love, Jordan Farmar, Luke Walton, Richard Jefferson, and David Lee, played in the annual tourney. In the Women’s Open finals, Team 900 took first place and Moonlight and Girls Gone Wild went home with second and third place respectively.
