After winning a silver medal at a 2012 Olympic Games test event and landing in the second spot on the USA Volleyball Beach National Rankings with her partner of five years Jen Kessy, April Ross has been named USAV’s Beach Female Athlete of the Year. Ross was named the Best Hitter and Best Server on the FIVB tour.
With a fourth place finish overall in the FIVB Olympics rankings and the second U.S. team, it is looking likely that the duo will get an opportunity to head to the London Olympics this summer. In 2008 Ross and Kessy were narrowly edged out of the Games by Nicole Branagh and Elaine Youngs, who took the second American spot alongside Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh. May-Traenor and Walsh are still top competition this time around, marking the one U.S. team that is ahead of them in the rankings.
While the Olympic qualification process has been focused on international play, Ross and Kessy have played strong domestically, wining the Jose Cuervo Beach Volleyball Tour event in Hermosa Beach and the National Volleyball League (NVL) event in Miami, both in September.
