UCLA Women Captures National Volleyball Title

UCLA celebrates after winning the National Title

For the past four years this event has been simply dominated by Penn State. Russ Rose and whatever motley crew he put together for the season did it again, and again, and again. But not this year. With Penn State shut out by UCLA in the third round, the Bruins were joined by Illinois, Florida St., and longtime rival USC in San Antonio, Texas.

In the September/October issue of VBM we listed who we thought would be the top contenders come December: Penn State, Texas, Nebraska, USC and Hawaii. Boy, have things changed since the fall. UCLA and Illinois were on our list of teams that could be possible “spoilers” to the top five, but Florida St. was hardly even on our radar. Kudos to them for making it onto the national scene.

In the end it was UCLA beating Illinois (25-23, 23-25, 26-24, 25-16) for their fourth National Title and the school’s 108th NCAA title.
