Irvine Valley hosted a tri-match on March 29 with Cal State Bakersfield and an All-Star squad that included Butch May (Misty May’s father and a member of the 1968 Olympic squad), April Ross, and Jen Kessy. Cal State Bakersfield swept Irvine Valley, but the All-Stars came out on top overall, going 5-0 against Irvine Valley and 4-1 against Cal State Bakersfield.

The head coach at Irvine Valley, Tom Pestolesi, coached Ross and Misty May in high school at Newport Harbor and helped to start the two-year college sand volleyball league in California, not to mention he played collegiately at Long Beach State and Hawaii, earning All-American honors in 1982 and ’83. There are now 16 schools in the two-year college league and they hope to become a state-sponsored sport by 2015.
