2013 VBM Boys' Fab 50

Presented by Mizuno

Casey White, Manhattan Beach, Calif.

Volleyball, the industry’s only printed publication covering all aspects of the sport, has been presenting its annual Fab 50 lists for boys and girls for more than three decades. Some of the sport’s all-time greats have graced the Fab 50 list over the years. This year’s Boys’ Fab 50 was voted on by an elite panel of NCAA Division I-II men’s college coaches – representing many of the game’s top programs. Who on this list will be the next big thing at the collegiate level and beyond? This year we did something a little different, and asked our panel to rank the top players in the class from 1-5. Check out who was voted the Class of 2013’s top recruit. Please enjoy the 2013 Volleyball Boys’ Fab 50 list, presented by Mizuno, which honors the top 50 senior boys’ youth talents in the United States.

Fab 50 Spotlight: Mitch Stahl

Mitch Stahl didn’t get bit by the volleyball bug until his freshman year at Chambersburg High School.

“Before, I was heavily into basketball whether it was AAU or high school,” he said. “A couple of friends were after me to play volleyball. When I got to ninth grade I decided to give it a whirl. I said, ‘What the heck? I may as well.’”

It didn’t take long for Stahl to become hooked.

“As soon as I touched a volleyball and hit it for the first time I fell in love with the sport,” he said. “It turned into a lifestyle for me playing high school and club and grass doubles during the summer. I love playing. I like the intensity of it.”

Stahl’s ascension to the top of the juniors’ ranks has been swift. The UCLA recruit headlines the 2013 Boys Fab 50 list as the top recruit.

“I’m very surprised where I’m at,” Stahl said. “I never expected to be at this level. It’s crazy how quickly I picked up the sport. My high school and club coaches have helped me get here. I feel blessed to be where I am in my career.”

The 6'8" Stahl, who led Chambersburg (located in Pennsylvania, an hour south of Harrisburg and 20 minutes from Maryland) to a state title and was named the state MVP as a junior, moved to outside hitter this season after spending the previous three years as a middle blocker. He plays on the right side for the Yorktowne Volleyball Club team. A move to the left has required Stahl to zero in on his defensive skills.

“My defense, especially the last year, has improved a lot,” said Stahl, who will head with his Yorktowne club team to USAV Junior Nationals in Reno, Nev., this summer. “I’m passing and playing defense. It’s something new. I feel like I’ve gotten good at it. Defense is not as natural as hitting and blocking. I’ve worked hard at it. I love playing outside. You are playing the whole way around and are always in the game. I’m digging and I’m running after balls 15 feet down the court. I love being involved in the entire game.”

Stahl, who sports a 4.0 cumulative grade point average, is ready for the next chapter in his volleyball career that will take him west to Los Angeles. He plans on studying computer science and engineering in Westwood.

“I’m really excited about UCLA,” he said. “I get the chance to play for Coach [John] Speraw. I can’t wait to play with all the guys there and I can’t wait to see how much better I’ll get the next four years there.”

Growing up, Stahl had dreams of playing college basketball.

“As a little kid I wanted to play basketball at a school like North Carolina,” he said. “Never in a million years did I think I’d be playing volleyball at UCLA. Going to UCLA is surreal. To make it to this point is crazy. I’m going to head out west and play with the best.”

Stahl is a member of Speraw's first signing class at UCLA and all eight UCLA recruits appear on this year's Fab 50 list.
