We’ve all seen the photos from Vegas pool parties with thousands of people raging to loud, bass-thumping music. I’ve even DJ-ed a few of those parties. But what about when you’re just having a backyard barbecue or a pool party with some close friends? You probably don’t want all the bass in your face. I tend to lean toward reggae for my summertime hangout music, as it always gives me that I’m on vacation vibe. There’s something about hanging out in boardshorts, or bikinis for the ladies, having the sun warm your skin, and the smell of great food in the air to really solidify that it’s summer. The key to a good playlist for a backyard barbecue/pool party is to set a positive vibe without having to crank the volume. You want your guests to be able to have a conversation without losing their voices and still keep a smile on their faces and a bounce in their step. When your guests don’t even realize they’re singing along or bobbing their heads to the music, that’s when you know they’re enjoying themselves and your song selection.

Here are some songs to get your backyard barbecue and pool-party playlist started.
