FIVB 2011 Kicking Things off in Brazil

Brazil's Juliana Felisberta Silva and Larissa Franca celebrate in front of their home fans

It was no shock that it was USA versus Brazil in both the women’s and men’s finals of the 2011 FIVB Beach Volleyball Swatch World Tour season opener. Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh went head to head with the host country’s Juliana Felisberta Silva and Larissa Franca, losing in three sets (21-16, 15-21, 15-12). The Brasilia Open marked the 15th time the two teams have met on the sand. The bronze medal match was all-American with reigning FIVB Swatch World Champions Jennifer Kessy and April Ross defeating Lauren Fendrick and Brooke Hanson (25-23, 21-19).

On the men’s side it was a rematch of last year’s gold medal match, with top-seeded Phil Dalhausser and Todd Rogers once again defeating Brazil’s Alison Cerutti and Emanuel Rego in two (21-18, 21-13). China’s duo of Penggen Wu and Linyin Xu defeated Brazil’s Marcio Araujo and Ricardo Santos for the bronze (21-17, 16-21, 21-10).

With the international beach volleyball circuit celebrating its 25th anniversary this season, nearly 140 teams from 35 countries competed in the $380,000 season opener.
