A look at some of the top right-side hitters in the current men’s college game

Of the 15 right-side hitters profiled here, 10 of them were ranked in the top 25 in the nation in kills per set through early March and five were ranked in the top 10 (Umlauft, Jones, Troy, Clark and Sangrey). Hawaii’s Umlauft was leading the nation in kills per set.

Jim Baughman
School: Long Beach State
Height: 6’7”
Year: Junior
Hometown: Valencia, Calif.
The hot read: Baughman has continued to improve for the 49ers during his tenure in Long Beach. He’s the team’s key go-to player this year—leading Long Beach State in kills through early March.

Kyle Caldwell
School: UCLA
Height: 6’9”
Year: Junior
Hometown: Newport Beach, Calif.
The hot read: Caldwell, once the team’s setter, shifted to the right side earlier this season and produced results immediately, tallying 14 kills in a match against Pepperdine.

Carson Clark
School: UC Irvine
Height: 6’5”
Year: Junior
Hometown: Santa Barbara, Calif.
The hot read: A first-team All-American and all-MPSF selection in 2010, Clark spent some time in the U.S. men’s national team program and picked up where he left off. He was among the national leaders in kills and service aces through the beginning of March.

Tom Comfort
School: Penn State
Height: 6’6”
Year: Sophomore
Hometown: Orchard Park, N.Y.
The hot read: After getting a taste of the college game in 19 matches as a freshman, Comfort has marched right into a leading role with the Nittany Lions. He was ranked second on the team in kills through early April.

Elon Fyfield
School: Indiana University–Purdue University at Fort Wayne
Height: 6’5”
Year: Sophomore
Hometown: Cambridge, Mass.
The hot read: Fyfield, who had 18 kills in his Mastodons debut last year, was second on the team in kills through early March.

Cullen Irons
School: UC Santa Barbara
Height: 6’8”
Year: Senior
Hometown: Hanford, Calif.
The hot read: Irons, who pounded home 32 kills in a match last year, was tied for the team lead in kills through the beginning of March.

Mark Jones
School: George Mason
Height: 6’5”
Year: Sophomore
Hometown: Glendale Heights, Ill.
The hot read: After seeing limited action as a freshman, Jones, a former Volleyball Fab 50 selection, has burst onto the scene this year. He was among the national leaders in kills per set through the beginning of March.

The hot read: The 2010 MIVA freshman of the year, Karbiener, an academic standout as well, was second on the Flyers in kills per set through early March.

Tanner Nua
School: Cal State Northridge

Year: Senior
Hometown: Palmdale, Calif.
The hot read: Nua was leading the team in service aces and was among the leaders in kills through the beginning of March. Made his presence felt in the 2010 MPSF championship match where he hit .385 against eventual national champion Stanford.

Shawn Sangrey
School: Ohio State

Year: Junior
Hometown: Columbia, Pa.
The hot read: An all-MIVA first-team selection a year ago, Sangrey was leading the Buckeyes in kills and aces through early March.

Robb Stowell
School: BYU
Height: 6’7”
Year: Junior
Hometown: San Juan Capistrano, Calif.
The hot read: A third-team all-MPSF selection as a sophomore, Stowell was the team-leader in kills for the Cougars through the beginning of March.

Maurice Torres
School: Pepperdine
Height: 6’7”
Year: Sophomore
Hometown: Riverside, Calif.
The hot read: A part of the all-MPSF freshman team in 2010, Torres was leading the Waves in kills through early March.

Murphy Troy
School: University of Southern California
Height: 6’8”
Year: Senior
Hometown: St. Louis, Mo.
The hot read: Troy has been a major player in USC’s ascension to the top of the men’s college volleyball world this year. He was leading the team in kills and was hitting north of .400 for the season as of early March.

Jonas Umlauft
School: Hawaii
Height: 6’9”
Year: Sophomore
Hometown: Stadtbergen, Germany
The hot read: Umlauft was leading all Division I-II men’s players in kills per set through early March.

Shane Veiga
School: UC San Diego
Height: 6’6”
Year: Junior
Hometown: Canyon Country, Calif.
The hot read: Veiga, who saw limited action in 2010, has become a key contributor for the Tritons. He was leading the team in kills per set through early March.
