AVP San Francisco day 2

AVP San Francisco

The AVP San Francisco had a near-shocker on Saturday as the kids nearly knocked off the favored veterans, but in the end, Kerri Walsh Jennings and April Ross are again the favorite to win the title on Sunday.

Here is the recap:

In the winners bracket, No. 1 Jake Gibb/Casey Patterson and No. 2 Trevor/Taylor Crabb advanced to Sunday’s semifinal round. Gibb/Patterson survived a battle with No. 13 Ty Loomis/Marty Lorenz 21-19, 19-21, 15-10. The Crabb brothers advanced in a 21-15, 21-19 straight set win over No. 3 Billy Allen/Theo Brunner.

In the contenders bracket, No. 5 John Mayer/Stafford Slick advanced to the semifinals over Allen/Brunner, 21-16, 21-15. No. 4 Ryan Doherty/Ty Tramblie marched to the quarterfinals via a win over No. 5 Jeremy Casebeer/Sean Rosenthal 21-13, 21-18, but subsequently forfeited their quarterfinal against Loomis/Lorenz, citing preventive concerns over Doherty’s ankle.

No. 11 Casey Jennings/Robbie Page finished strong in seventh in San Francisco after their 13th in New York, by putting No. 8 Brad Keenan/Todd Rogers out of the tournament 21-15, 21-14.

In the winner’s bracket, No. 1 April Ross/Kerri Walsh-Jennings advanced after surviving a 54 minute battle with No. 13 Kelly Claes/Sara Hughes 17-21, 21-18, 17-15. No. 2 Lane Carico/Summer Ross claimed the second winner’s bracket semifinal berth over No. 3 Kim DiCello/Kendra VanZwieten 21-14, 21-19.

One could make the argument that Claes/Hughes the NCAA Beach champions from USC who went unbeaten this year in collegiate play could be the second best team in the U.S after taking a game from Walsh/Jennings, a rare feat domestically. We will get a better idea after they match up with Carico/Ross in the second semifinal.

The final contenders bracket semifinal was snatched up by Emily Day/Brittany Hochevar, who took down No. 6 Angela Bensend/Geena Urango (21-19, 21-15) and No. 3 DiCello/VanZwieten (19-21, 21-18, 15-12).

No. 11 Ali McColloch/Kelly Reeves also had a nice weekend, finishing in fifth place after overcoming No. 4 Jen Fopma/Jen Kessy 21-19, 21-18.
