During the U.S. Women’s National Team winter training block, Calvin College head coach Amber Warners, who led her team to the 2013 Division III national title, worked with Team USA head coach Karch Kiraly and the national team athletes to test the use of a wireless microphone system she developed and has been using with her Calvin squad. The earpiece worn by players allows them to communicate with coaches even in the middle of a drill or rally. Kiraly and Warners, along with Seattle Seahawks sports psychologist Mike Gervais, used the device to test the effect of positive self-talk on players performances. Depending on the results of their work, Warners may be invited back to work with the national team in the summer.

While Warners was there to pitch her idea to Kiraly, she also relished the opportunity to observe the legendary coach and player. [This is] probably the best honor I could receive as a coach, to be able to work with the best in the world, which is a thrill for me, she said in an interview with the Calvin student newspaper Chimes.
