Checking in on the FIVB Porec Major in Croatia:

The men have completed one round of elimination playoffs, while the women have reached the semifinals.

No. 3 seed Phil Dalhausser/Nick Lucena won their pool with a 2-1 match record and 5-3 game record. They have a bye for the first round and are slated to play fellow Americans No. 13 Tri Bourne/John Hyden in the second round. Bourne/Hyden finished second in their pool to Gibb/Patterson with a 2-1 match record and 4-3 set record. They advanced to the second round beating No. 16 Alex Ranghieri/Adrian Carambula of Italy 28-26, 21-15.

No. 4 Jake Gibb/Casey Patterson completed pool play 3-0 (6-0) and earned a first-round bye. Gibb/Patterson will face No. 7 Bartosz Losiak/Piotr Kantor in the second round.

Q8 Jeremy Casebeer/Sean Rosenthal advanced past Q25 Lorenz Schumann/Julius Thole of Germany, but failed to qualify with a loss to Q9 Lorenz Petutschnig/Tobias Winter of Austria 17-21, 21-18, 15-13.

In pool B, No. 2 Alexander Brouwer/Robert Meeuwsen of the Netherlands dropped matches to both Saymon Barbosa/Gustavo Carvalhaes of Brazil and Clemens Horst/Alexander Doppler of Austria to finish third in their pool. This sets up a round of 16 match between No. 1 Alison Cerutti/Bruno Oscar Schmidt of Brazil vs No. 2 Brouwer/Meeuwsen, the loser receiving a disappointing ninth place finish.

On the women’s side, No. 12 Lauren Fendrick/Brooke Sweat, the only main draw U.S. team, went 0-3 in matches, 1-6 in games.

The U.S.’ only qualifying team, Q14 Betsi Flint/Kelley Larsen, won their first round of qualifying over Q19 Anja Dorfler/Julia Radl of Austria 21-15, 21-12, but were eliminated by Q3 Maria Antonelli/Liliane Maestrini of Brazil 19-21, 21-17, 15-12.

No. 13 Marta Menegatti/Viktoria Orsi-Toth of Italy pulled off a big upset in the second round, eliminating No. 1 Lariss Franca/Talita Antunes of Brazil 15-21, 22-20, 15-13.

The remaining semifinalists are No. 10 Karla Borger/Britta Buthe of Germany, No. 19 Chantal Laboreur/Julia Sude of Germany, No. 4 Sarah Pavan/Heather Bansley of Canada, and No. 2 Laura Ludwig/Kira Walkenhorst of Germany. Pavan/Bansley are the only team standing between Germany and a medal sweep in Porec.
