TORONTO — The USA’s Tri Bourne and John Hyden, ranked 12th at the SWATCH FIVB World Tour Finals, scored a couple of upsets Thursday and are sitting atop Pool D, with a bye into the quarterfinals and guaranteed at least a tie for fifth.

They knocked off No. 4 Chaim Schalk/Ben Saxton (Canada) 21-17, 21-17 and No. 5 Evandro Goncalves/Pedro Solberg (Brazil) 19-21, 21-19, 15-12.

Fellow Americans Kerri Walsh-Jennings and April Ross are in the women’s quarterfinals after wins over Isabelle Forrer/Anouk Verge-Depre (Switzerland) 27-25, 21-19 and Louise Bawden/Taliqua Clancy (Australia) 21-13, 21-12.

On the other hand, Phil Dalhausser/Nick Lucena dropped their match to Piotr Kantor/Bartosz Losiak (Poland) 21-10, 21-15 to finish 1-1 in their pool. They still advance to the single-elimination bracket.

The other Polish team, Grzegorz Fijalek/Mariusz Prudel upset Alexander Brouwer/Robert Meeuwsen (Netherlands) 21-14, 26-24.

The biggest surprise of the event, however, is that the Olympic golden girls, Laura Ludwig/Kira Walkenhorst (Germany) are 0-2, dropping matches to Joana Heidrich/Nadine Zumkehr (Switzerland) 10-21, 21-16, 15-8 and Ana Gallay/Georgina Klug (Argentina) 17-21, 21-18, 16-14.

Friday’s schedule at Polson Pier is full, as the men will complete pool play, round of 16, and quarterfinal play, while the women will complete round of 16, quarterfinal, and semifinal play.
