Four American duos advanced to the quarterfinals of the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships this morning, while one team was eliminated.
Casey Patterson and Jake Gibb defeated Canada’s Josh Binstock and Sam Schachter in straight sets this morning in Apeldorn. They will play Brazil’s Alison and Bruno Oscar Schmidt at 1 p.m. ET in the quarterfinals.
Nick Lucena and Theo Brunner took on veteran Brazilian duo Emanuel Rego and Ricardo Santos. With the close score of 21-18, 18-21, 15-11, Brunner and Lucena took the W to advance to the Amsterdam quarterfinal where they will face Jefferson Santos Pereira and Cherif Younou of Qatar.
John Hyden and Tri Bourne took on Germans Jonathan Erdmann and Kay Matysik in the round of 16, winning that match 2-1. The Americans will now battle with Reinder Nummerdor and Christiaan Varenhorst of the Netherlands.
On the women’s side, Lauren Fendrick and Brooke Sweat guaranteed that they will at least match their season-high international finish of fifth when they defeated Italian duo Marta Menegatti and Vikoria Orsi Toth this morning. Theyll take on Katrin Holtwick and Ilka Semmler of Germany in the Rotterdam quarterfinal.
Kerri Walsh Jennings and April Ross had a strong start to the elimination bracket, defeating their opponents Gabriela Filippo and Michelle Valiente of Paraguay 21-6, 21-10, but in the second round, they were eliminated by China’s Fan Wang and Yuan Yue in three.
