Kicking Off 2014 Season in New Conferences

ETSU players will start their 2014 season competing against new conference foes.

East Tennessee State, Louisville, and Maryland’s women’s volleyball teams will be some of the first athletes to compete for their schools new conferences.

After an appearance in the Atlantic Sun Conference championship match, ETSU rejoins the Southern Conference (SoCon), which it was a member of from 1978-2005.

Louisville, after an undefeated conference season last fall, makes a big move from the AAC (American Athletic Conference) to the ACC (Atlantic Coast Conference) where it will play against tough competitors Duke, Florida State, and North Carolina, among others.

Maryland makes the boldest move of all, however, adding its 20 varsity programs to the Big Ten. Both teams in the women’s national final and seven of the teams in the round of 16 last year hailed from this powerhouse conference, meaning new Maryland head coach Steve Aird has his work cut out for him in his inaugural head coaching season. Rutgers will also join the Big Ten for the 2014 season.
