A little of this and a little of that, including some interesting men’s results from Wednesday night, a look ahead to the weekend, and the sad passing of Ellen Toy, a volleyball inspiration.

Long Beach wins at Hawai’i

Top-ranked Long Beach State won at No. 7 Hawai’i in four, behind 17 kills and 10 digs by freshman TJ DeFalco. Here’s the LBSU account.

Here is the story from the Hawai’i side of things. The two teams play again on Friday.

Also Wednesday, UCSB swept USC and UCLA did the same to Cal Baptist. Thursday night Stanford is at UC San Diego. For the latest in MPSF happenings, click here.

There are other big matches, of course, Friday and Saturday in all four leagues, the MPSF, MIVA, EIVA and Conference Carolinas. We’ll have a wrap-up after the weekend.

Rest in peace, Ellen Toy

This is straight from the Pittsburgh newspaper story about her:

A well-known high school volleyball coach and standout player in her own right, it was Ellen Toy’s inherent strength and positivity as she battled cancer that was the true inspiration to those who knew her.

“She was always intense and very passionate about volleyball — it was more than a sport to her,” said Maggie Jones, Kiski Area’s softball coach, who worked with Toy as assistant volleyball coach from 2012 to 2014. “She used the sport to make all her players better people.”

Toy, 54, of Vandergrift, a girls volleyball coach at Leechburg Area and Kiski Area, died from stomach cancer on Monday, Feb. 22, 2016, at home.

Toy was a 1979 graduate of Kiski Area High School and 1984 graduate of the University of Pittsburgh. She was a volleyball star at both schools.

Beyond the beach

Check out this feature by Jordan Schwartz of the NCAA about how the Stanford beach team is making an impact off the sand.

Bad Bear. Really

Her name is Naomi Bad Bear and the Billings, Montana, outside hitter has signed to play with Rocky Mountain College. Got to be the coolest name in the sport. Here’s the story.

FIVB Beach

Finally, there’s a tournament going on in Brazil and it’s part of the Olympic qualifying process. Here’s the link from the FIVB story to all that’s happening in Maceio. Plenty of Americans are playing.
