Lewis knocks off UCI; Hawa’i, Long Beach, UCLA, BYU, Ohio St. win in NCAA men’s volleyball

Fourteenth-ranked Lewis, 3-6 in its previous nine matches and coming off a lopsided loss to Hawai’i the day before, stunned No. 5 UC Irvine at Hawai’i on Friday.

Later in Honolulu, third-ranked Hawai’i gave top-ranked and previously unbeaten Grand Canyon its second loss in as many days.

Second-ranked Long Beach State beat UC Santa Barbara in four, No. 4 UCLA beat No. 9 Penn State in five, No. 6 BYU beat No. 7 Stanford also in five, and No. 8 Ohio State beat No. 12 USC in four.

Benedict got its first victory of the season when it won its SIAC match over Central State and the line of the day went to Quincy’s Raje Alleyne, who had 33 kills in a loss to Maryville.

After a busy Friday, Saturday’s NCAA men’s Division I-II schedule is fairly light.

In the Big West, Long Beach State and UCSB trade places and head up to Santa Barbara.

BYU and Stanford go at it again in the only MPSF match of the day.

Two MIVA teams play independents when Quincy goes to Missouri S&T and McKendree is home for Maryville.

The EIVA’s George Mason plays FDU of the NEC. Two other NEC teams are in action when D’Youville plays independent Tusculum and LIU faces Barton of Conference Carolinas.

Mount Olive of Conference Carolinas plays independent Lincoln Memorial. Lees-McRae of Conference Carolinas tries to break its losing streak against Life and St. Andrews.

There are two ECC matches with Dominican playing Roberts Wesleyan and St. Thomas Aquinas facing American International.

And in the SIAC the two league matches have Benedict playing Kentucky State and Edward Waters versus Central State.

There are also three Pro Volleyball Federation matches Saturday when the Columbus Fury go to the Grand Rapids Rise for the first noon first serve of the season, and at night the Vegas Thrill are at the Atlanta Vibe and the Omaha Supernovas go to the Orlando Valkyries.

Lewis (11-9) of the MIVA knocked off UCI (13-5) of the Big West 22-25, 25-19, 18-25, 25-20, 15-11 behind 17 kills from Daniel Haber, 16 from Syver Drolsum and 15 from Max Roquet, who had six blocks. Shawn Baggs had 10 kills with one erorr in 14 attacks, an ace, two digs and seven blocks, one solo. Tyler Morgan had two kills in three errorless attempts, 49 assists, an ace, four blocks and two digs. Lewis hit .368 and had three aces and eight serving errors.

UCI, which had won seven in a row, including a five-set victory over GCU on Thursday, hit .361 and had four aces — three by Maxim Grigoriev — and 17 errors. Hilir Henno continued to lead the Anteaters, this time with 24 kills while hitting .419 to go with two assists, a block and six digs. He had no aces and five errors. William D’Arcy had 17 kills, an ace, a block and five digs. Connor Campbell had 13 kills and Grigorieve 10 while hitting .471 to go with three digs and four blocks, one solo. Brett Sheward had a kill in two errorless tries, 54 assists, a block and six digs … 

Hawai’i (16-1) of the Big West thumped Grand Canyon (15-2) of the MPSF 25-17, 25-20, 25-20. UH, winning its 15th in a row, hit .449 and had more aces (8) than errors (7). Spryos Chakas led with 14 kills, hitting .478, and had an assist, two aces and eight digs. Alaka’i Todd had 11 kills with two errors in 13 swings, an assist, two aces, three blocks and three digs. Tread Rosenthal had three kills in four errorelss attempts, 37 assists, an ace, three blocks and two digs. GCU, which hit .304 and had one ace and 12 errors, got 16 kills from Camden Gianni, who hit .429 … 

Long Beach State (15-1) rallied for a 22-25, 25-21, 25-20, 25-20 victory in its Big West opener over visiting No. 19 UC Santa Barbara (7-11, 0-2). Skyler Varga led with 19 kills, hitting .395, and had three assists, no aces and five errors, two blocks and eight digs. Sotiris Siapanis had 15 kills, hit .480, and had an assist, an ace, two blocks and four digs. Clarke Godbold had 14 kills, hit .345, and had a block and six digs. Aidan Knipe had 52 assists, two blocks and eight digs. His team hit .411 and had three aces and 18 errors. UCSB’s Geste Bianchi had 25 kills with four errors in 50 swings to hit .420 and added an ace, trhee blocks and eight digs. The Gauchos hit .333 and had four aces and 20 errors …

UCLA (15-4) of the MPSF battled to a 25-20, 21-25, 22-25, 25-21,15-12 victory over Penn State (13-6) of the EIVA at USC. Ethan Champlin led the Bruins with 15 kills and hit .500 after having just three errors in 24 attacks to go with three assists and six digs. Cooper Robinson had 11 kills, hit .450, and had an assist, a block and two digs. UCLA hit .327 and had eight aces and 26 errors. Penn State, which hit .275 and had nine aces and 25 errors, got 19 kills from John Kerr. He added an assist, two of those aces and five digs. Michael Valenzi had 10 kills, an assist, two aces, six digs and two blocks, one solo ..  

Kupono Browne had a career-high 26 kills as BYU (11-6, 2-3) came away with a 25-13, 16-25, 23-25, 25-23, 18-16 MPSF victory at Stanford (8-9, 1-4). Browne, who hit .388, had an assist, two aces and five digs. Luke Benson had 13 kills, two assists, two aces, a block and seven digs. Miks Ramanis had 12 kills, including the match-winner. He had an assist, two blocks and 13 digs. BYU, which had a season-best 64 kills, hit .322 and had six aces and 17 errors. Stanford, which hit .285, had nine aces and 18 errors. Will Rottman had 17 kills, an assist, an ace, a block and six digs. Kevin Lamp had 14 kills, three assists, an ace and nine digs …

Ohio State (15-4) of the MIVA won 22-25, 25-11, 25-23, 25-20 at USC (11-9) of the MPSF. The Buckeyes got 15 kills from Jacob Pasteur, who hit .333 and had two assists, five digs and four blocks, one solo. Kyle Teune and Shane Wetzel had 11 kills each. Wetzel had two aces, a dig and five blocks, one solo. Justin Howard had eight blocks to go with four kills. Ohio State hit .387 and had six aces and 14 errors. USC hit .223 and had five aces and 19 errors. Dillon Klein led with 17 kills and Jack Deuchar had 13 … 

Two other MPSF teams were in action. Tenth-ranked Pepperdine (14-5) won in four at North Greenville of Conference Carolinas (7-7) as Cole Ketrzynski had 24 kills and hit .477 to go with an assist, three aces, a dig and five blocks … Concordia Irvine (6-8) was beaten in four at home by St. Xavier (2-1) of Illinois …

Quincy (5-10) of the MIVA lost in five at independent Maryville (17-3), which has won 13 in a row. But the star of the match was Quincy’s Raje Alleyne, who had 33 kills with four errors in 51 attacks to hit .569. He had an ace (but seven errors), five blocks and eight digs. Maryville got 13 kills each from Makai Scott and Luke Kraft … Another MIVA team, No. 20 McKendree (11-6) crushed visiting Erskine (9-8) of Conference Carolinas, hitting .4333. Erskine had 17 kills and 27 hitting errors …  

Daemen (13-3) of the NEC swept independent Tusculum (4-12) as Cameron Milligan and Zach Schneider had 11 kills each … The NEC’s LIU (6-11) swept Barton (9-6) of Conference Carolinas as Gio Collazo had 12 kills, an assist, two aces, eight digs and seven blocks, two solo.

The lone EIVA conference match saw No. 17 George Mason (8-7. 3-2) win in four over visiting NJIT (8-7, 3-2), which lost despite hitting .391. Mason’s Omar Hoyos and Sam Peters had 12 kills each. NJIT’s Antonio Feliciano had 15 kills and hit .500 … The EIVA’s Harvard (9-5) swept at the NEC’s Merrimack (6-8) as Logan Shepherd led a balanced attack with 11 kills. Logan Whitaker had 19 kills for Merrimack … 

Benedict (1-11, 1-3) and Central State (3-17, 1-2) played twice in the SIAC. Central State won the first in five behind 22 kills from Tyrone Sands. Benedict won the nightcap in four as Zion Beckford had 15 kills, two aces, four digs and three blocks … Edward Waters (5-7, 2-0) won in four at Kentucky State (2-8, 1-2) as Tavion Ford had 15 kills, hit .444, and had an assist, three aces, four digs and a block … Fort Valley State (8-5, 3-0) swept visiting Morehouse (0-5, 0-1) as 13 of its players had kills, eight by Oshane Farquharson with no errors in 11 attacks.
