USC’s Sara Hughes and Kelly Claes collected their third pairs title of the season at the Hermosa Beach USAV Collegiate Challenge. The duo defeated Pepperdine’s Lara Dykstra and Becca Strehlow in the gold bracket final 21-13, 21-14. Hughes and Claes, both still only sophomores, boast a 28-3 overall record and an undefeated 12-0 record in tournament play, claiming the pairs title at the USC tournament and the University of Hawaii’s Queen’s Beach tournament earlier in the season. The Trojans have yet to lose a duals match and will carry their 19-0 record into a couple of matches at Irvine Valley College Tuesday night.
In the semifinals of the Collegiate Challenge Pairs Tournament gold bracket, Hughes and Claes met Loyola Marymount’s Sarah Sponcil and Betsi Metter, who have handed the top Trojan duo two of its three losses for the year. This time Hughes and Claes prevailed in a close three-set battle (21-11, 18-21, 15-12). The LMU top pair has had an impressive season as well, claiming a 19-5 overall record.
Pepperdine’s Kellie Woolever and Kelley Larsen won the silver bracket. Woolever and Larsen had been competing at the top spot for the Waves but traded spots with Dykstra and Strehlow after Pepperdine’s loss to USC on April 4.
In the duals portion of the event, Pepperdine, USC, Hawaii, and LMU all went 2-0. Other participating schools included Santa Clara, University of San Francisco, Long Beach, and Grand Canyon.
