U.S. Settles for Silver in Montreux

Germany upset Team USA in the final of the Montreux Volley Masters tournament in Montreux, Switzerland, May 31. The U.S. went undefeated in pool play, taking down Germany, Japan, and the Dominican Republic and beat Russia in playoffs. But with Germany taking the final in four the U.S. was ultimately forced to settle for silverTeam USA’s fourth second-place finish in Montreux.

Rookie outside hitter Kelsey Robinson (pictured above) led the team with 16 kills in the final and a positive service reception percentage of 62. The U.S. held the advantage in blocks and aces but committed 10 more errors than Germany in a match won by a total of 12 points (25-19, 19-25, 25-17, 25-21). Germany also held the defensive advantage with 51 digs to Team USA’s 36.

Brazil, ranked No. 1 in the world coming into the Montreux tournament, lost to Russia and went to five with China in pool play, forcing the team to battle for fifth place with Japan, a match the South American team won 19-25, 25-20, 25-11, 25-22. In the bronze medal match, Russia defeated China 19-25, 25-19, 17-25, 25-22, 15-11.
