USC entered the University of San Diego Jenny Craig Arena for USD’s home tournament ranked No. 1 in VBM‘s weekly poll, with USD not too far behind at No. 10. But in USD’s home opening match with 2,014 fans in attendance, the Toreros beat the Trojans, making San Diego’s tally of defeated top 20 teams four for the year. San Diego’s middles ran the show with Chloe Ferrari gathering 21 kills in the match, hitting an impressive .531, and Katie Hoekman earning 17 for a percentage of .387.
Following the upset, San Diego rocketed up the rankings to come in at No. 3 and they have continued their winning streak, defeating Eastern Washington, UC Santa Barbara, and San Diego State, all in straight sets. USC, for their part, will look to the match against UCLA on Wednesday, September 25, to prove they deserve to stay in the top 5.
