Treats for Taste Buds
An excellent option for your college athlete away at school, these snack subscription boxes ship out monthly (or bi-weekly), bringing your loved one nutritious and tasty snacks right to their home or dorm room. Here are a couple of our favorites:
Graze, a London-based company, recently started offering its snack-delivery service to customers in the U.S. Each $6.99 (shipping included) box includes four snacks. You make your preferences clear on the website, and the company selects what to send you based on which items remain on your try list, while anything on the trash list will be avoided. After you receive your first box, you can rate each snack so Graze can do its best to send you more things youll like in the next delivery.
Founded by Aihui Ong, a former software engineer, Love With Food sends only all-natural or organic snacks in its monthly boxes. Boxes start at $10/month for eight snacks, but for $17/month you can order the deluxe box which features 16-20 snacks. Gluten-free? LWF offers that option too, but itll cost you $25. For each box sold, Love With Food donates a meal to a food bankwhat could be more in the holiday spirit than that? Love a product you try in the box? You can order full-size products on the company’s website.
For $19.95 a month, Nature Box ships a box of five snack packages, which you can either select in advance or let them choose for you. The company’s collection of over 100 snack items, everything from cheddar and onion sunflower kernels to watermelon fruit chews, can be sorted by taste (savory, sweet, or spicy) or filtered by a variety of dietary restrictions (gluten-free, nut-free, soy-free, milk-free, vegan, etc.). Like Love with Food, for every box it sells, Nature Box donates a meal to charity, specifically the nonprofit Feeding America.
From the Heart
Give back this holiday season by donating in your loved one’s name instead of buying them a present. Or ask your friends and family to donate in your name in lieu of gifts. Here are some great volleyball-related charities to consider:
Coaches 4 Coaches: Current AVCA members donate to sponsor one of their peers who is looking to attend his or her first AVCA Convention.
Dig 4 Kids: Olympian Eric Fonoimoana founded this after-school program that aims to provide low-income kids with academic and athletic opportunities and mentoring.
Side-Out Foundation: Join others in the volleyball community in the fight against breast cancer.
Starlings: Provide opportunities for girls in lower-income areas to play club volleyball and pursue college athletic scholarships.
USA Deaf Volleyball: Assist USADVB in fielding national deaf teams and support deaf athletes as they strive to make their athletic dreams come true.
USA Volleyball Foundation: Support all USA Volleyball initiatives, including sitting volleyball, national teams, and grassroots programs.
Sticking to Tradition
What’s more classic than pulling out socks and underwear from your stocking on Christmas morning? We respect tradition, but prefer our under-essentials with a little volleyball twist.
Wood Underwear, based in Hermosa Beach, makes their lusciously soft boxers and briefs from beech tree cellulose, aka Modal. The company also supports the volleyball community and has sponsored a 6-man team the last couple of years. Top competitors know what you wear under your uniform matters, and we highly recommend a pair of Wood boxer briefs for your favorite athlete.
For the ladies, Under Armour has our vote for best game-day knickers. This company made their name manufacturing under-uniform essentials, and almost 20 years after its founding, the brand continues to elevate athletic performance from under your clothes. So comfortable youll forget youre wearing them, these underwear allow you to focus on the next play instead of fidgeting and readjusting between each serve.
It’s hard to go wrong with volleyball socks. For the peppy, young athlete, Under Armour offers a slew of neon, camo, and superhero-themed socks. ASICS wins the comfort award with their classic volleyball crew sock while Nike’s Hyper Elite basketball sock makes the transition to the volleyball court smoothly, offering top performance for the trendy volleyball star.
