World Championships Stare Jablonki

It was a full house at the men's World Championship final in Poland.

Chen Xue and Xi Zhang of China took home the largest purse of the FIVB season with their gold medal match win over Borger and Bthe of Germany in the FIVB World Championships. It was the German team’s highest finish of the year, topping their fourth in Rome.

With Jen Kessy taking a break due to injury April Ross joined up with Whitney Pavlik. The first-time team had a good showing, taking fourth after losing to Brazilians Liliane Maestrini and Barbara Seixas De Freitas in the bronze medal match. Lauren Fendrick and Brittany Hochevar also performed well, earning a season-high placement of fifth.

American men had a weak showing in Stare Jablonki with Phil Dalhausser and Sean Rosenthal earning the highest finish at ninth. Jake Gibb and Casey Patterson as well as Todd Rogers and Ryan Doherty earned 17ths after falling in the Round of 32.

It was the Netherlands and Brazil in the men’s final. The Dutch duo Alexander Brouwer and Robert Meeuwsen came into the tournament as 13 seeds, but took the gold medal match 21-18, 21-16 over Ricardo Santos and Alvaro Filho. Brouwer and Meeuwsen’s highest finish previously was a ninth at the Shanghai Grand Slam. With the silver medal finish Ricardo became the most decorated player in World Championships history accumulating one gold medal, two silvers, and a bronze.

Another little-known German duo medals in Stare Jablonki. Jonathan Erdmann and Kay Matysik defeated Alison Cerrutti and Emanuel Rego in the bronze medal match. It was the first FIVB medal for the team.
