Two new combinations of veterans and newbies combined for wins on the NVL tour on Sunday at Bradford Beach in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Mark Williams, a 36-year-old two-time Olympian, partnered with Skyler McCoy, a 22-year-old newbie playing in only his seventh NVL event.
Williams and McCoy, the No. 12 seed, upset the apple cart with wins over top seed Piotr Marciniak and Matt Henderson (21-17, 21-12), sixth seed Skylar DelSol and Jeff Samuels (14-21, 24-22, 15-10), and No. 7 seed Mike DiPierro and Jon Mesko (22-20, 26-24). The title is the pair’s first on the NVL tour.
On the Women’s side, AVP and NVL veteran Raquel Ferreira teamed with Vivian Cunha, a NVL rookie with significant FIVB tour experience playing for Azerbaijan. The team came out of the qualifier to upset second-seeded Kristen Batt-Rohr and Priscilla Piantadosi-Lima (21-15, 21-13), No. 3 seed Chelsea Hayes and Jennifer Snyder (21-15, 21-15), and fifth seed Chara Harris and Brittany Tiegs (21-8, 19-21, 15-12), and eventually defeating Batt-Rohr and Piantadosi-Lima a second time (21-19, 21-16). Ferreira and Cunha have proven themselves to be a force on the NVL tour, with a first and so far this season.
The NVL’s next event is July 16-18, in Cincinnati, Ohio.
